LIFE Multi Peat
We mapped the peat within The Valley of the Grote Beek as part of the LIFE Multi Peat project. Together with an internee of the university of Antwerp, we went into the field with a stick to "feel" the peat depth. On every sampling location we took a soil sample to assess the peat quality. In the valley about 1.4 million cubic meter of peat is present. On most places this is about one meter thick. The thickest peat layer was found just west of the Koolmijnlaan in the Ulfort forest. Here, the peat layer is up to 2.65 meter thick!
