Presentation to explain the concept of “Paludiculture” (by Gert-Jan van Duinen – Stichting Bargerveen)

Paludiculture Workshop, Belgium

On October 18th 2022, LIFE Multi Peat, ILVO, Stichting Bargerveen and Radboud University invited Flemish agricultural organisations, organisations and governments to Deurne (Netherlands) to learn about paludiculture or “wet farming”. We discussed the many opportunities this sustainable and climate-conscious farming technique can provide, and brought paludiculture closer to home, where we will conduct a pilot study in the Grote Beek Valley within this project.

During the morning session, paludiculture experts and research institutions from Belgium and the Netherlands, especially Stichting Bargerveen, Radboud University and ILVO, guided and inspired us through presentations that addressed paludiculture in general with different crops for wet agriculture, revenue models, policy frameworks, practical examples and potential for Flanders. In the afternoon, we went into the field and visited a successful plot where Cattail has been grown for several years.
