Eurosite Webinars: Peatlands, Farming, and the Common Agricultural Policy

On 19 December 2024, Eurosite organised a webinar presenting the interim results of two peatland projects: LIFE Multi Peat and EUKI ‘Building the European Peatlands Initiative. 

We welcomed two speakers:

Leonor Cesar das Neves – European Landowners' Organization: First steps to proactive peatland management: Guidance for agriculture, forestry, and restoration

Wiktor Kotowski – Wetlands Conservation Centre: Preliminary recommendations for the Common Agricultural Policy (based on the analysis from 5 EU countries in the Life Multi Peat project).

The first part of the webinar was focused on the introduction of the three manuals designed to guide landowners, farmers, and peatland managers on their first steps toward proactive peatland management. With a focus on agriculture, forestry, and restoration, these resources provide practical strategies and insights into why taking action is critical for ecological health, carbon storage, and sustainable land use. The manuals were developed in the frame of the EUKI project, “Building the European Peatlands Initiative: a strong alliance for peatland climate protection in Europe”. EUKI is a project financing instrument by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). 

The second part of the webinar was dedicated to the presentation of the preliminary works leading to the formulation of recommendations for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). We'd like to discuss possible pathways how to improve the strategic plans and also the implementation of specific CAP schemes in order to make the CAP more supportive for the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of peatlands. Based on the experiences from the five EU countries (Poland, Germany, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands) involved in the Life Multi Peat project, we'd like to support the discussion on the possible future shape of the CAP.
